National Needs Fellowships

The Department of Forestry at the University of Missouri has been awarded funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to initiate a National Needs Fellowship graduate program that integrates disciplinary diversity in graduate training to support forest resource management decisions. The Fellowships will provide an excellent opportunity for two Master and two Doctoral students interested in decision- making through integrating knowledge from ecology, hydrology, forest management, forest economics and forest policy.

Fellows will be trained in the interdisciplinary manner required for sustainable forest management. Research areas include, but are not limited to, disturbance ecology, forest economics and policy, silviculture and watershed hydrology. Fellows will form an interdisciplinary Forestry Research Group focusing on providing fundamental research needs for forest ecosystem management. Graduates from our Fellowship Program will take leadership roles in public and private institutions in research and policy, actively participating in the decision-making process of forest management.

Financial support: $24,500 annual stipend for Ph.D. students and $18,500 for MS students plus tuition waiver. Duration: M.S. Fellows will be supported for two years and includes funding for international experiences. Ph.D. Fellows will be supported for four years. Starting date: Fall 2010 Application deadlines: March 15, 2010 Requirements: Applicants must be U.S. citizens or native residents of U.S. territories. Fellows must be admitted in the Forestry Graduate Program at the University of Missouri Female and minority applicants are especially encouraged to apply.
